It’s not easy being a man in this day and age, what with our generation being as demanding and competitive as it is. In a world which is constantly changing, we as men are constantly subjected to various assumptions and expectations and at times it can be tough to stay true to oneself through it all. Whilst some traits – or values – have been lost to men over the generations, there are those which we should always strive to embody, regardless of time and age.
It would seem that the world today demands immediate answers for everything. This leaves the world unable to think ahead and therefore incapable of crafting powerful, long-term relationships. It would seem that loyalty is dead to this world.
Yet we as men of honour should strive to reclaim and restore this lost loyalty by rejecting the parts of our culture which demands and answer now or a relationship immediately. Do not doubt that there are people in this world who will assist you through life and who you, in return, can too give aid to.
Society has conditioned men to be passive in the sense that we are given everything and therefore expect immediate gratification and a result to our problems straight away. The problem is that it is expected and not acted upon. Action is one of the greatest traits a man can posses as it cause us to understand ourselves on a deeper level. In order to know when and how to act, you have to understand your capabilities, values and what you are willing to do for yourself. Being a man of action is a refreshing place to be.
We live in an uncompromising, harsh world where trials and tribulations are a daily occurrence. The world thrives on the failures of others and this can often lead to us men becoming angry at ourselves for tripping over those who would see us fail. Yet through it all, it is important to remember that compassion is the sign of a true man.
Whilst it is hard to understand others, a wise man will show compassion for others. A wise man will understand that despite the current trials he may find himself wading through, others are struggling with problems, just as he is. Sometimes life is, what it is.
It’s natural as a man to seek adventure. It is at the core of our being to want to take risks, chase goals and explore yet society has conditioned us to be calculated in our actions and to comply with existing rules. Yet as men, we should always strive to embody risk. Remember that you will never have anything of true worth in life if you are not willing to risk embarrassment and rejection. Embrace this reality and use it to your advantage.
Men should take their self-esteem seriously. Do not mistake ego for self-esteem for whilst they are worlds apart, they go hand-in-hand. I once read that “A reasonable quantity of ego is good and a reasonable quantity of external validation is okay.” We should not bother with the demands of the world, but rather focus on our own vision and aspirations and thereby find our very own validation. This will see us become inspired and motivated with life.
As always, becoming the man you were meant to be is not an overnight fix. It will take time for you to understand these qualities, embrace them and then live them.
You stay classy,
