You’d think that this story has run its course, right? Clearly not. You know this story. You know this haunted house. The one somewhere in New York State with the creaky floorboards, lurking ghouls and horrific past? The house which haunts the male character to the extent where he wants to off his entire family? Heard it before? You should have because it’s been done over and over and yet they still claim that each new tale is another ‘true story.’ Pfffft! Despite it having been done since ages ago, this new addition – ‘Amityville: The Awakening’ – actually gives me the creeps and is guaranteed to scare the shit out of me.
There is something about old buildings which I enjoy. They’re normally quite grand in size, have large wings which are out-of-bounds and the walls seem to want to tell you all their secrets. It gives me shivers up my spine just thinking about it. Throw in a couple of loonies and a few twisted doctors and you’ve got yourself the makings of a seriously creepy tale. ‘Stonehearst Asylum’ is just that and has a ‘Shutter Island’ feel to it as it too tells the story of a mental institution where everything is not as it seems on the surface. Directed by Brad Anderson – ‘The Machinist’ and ‘Session 9’ – the movie stars Michael Caine, Brendan Gleeson, Ben Kingsley and Kate Beckinsale. It looks like a nail-biting-edge-of-your-seat kind of movie. Continue reading
